RICHMOND–Delegate Mike Cherry (R-Colonial Heights) this week introduced legislation extending enhanced retirement benefits to public safety dispatchers, commonly known as 911 dispatchers. House Bill 204 and House Bill 205 will extend these benefits to state and local dispatchers, respectively.

“Localities across our state continue to face challenges in filling these critical public safety roles,” stated Cherry. “By offering enhanced retirement benefits in line with other first responders, we can help address this shortage and ensure that those facing emergencies receive timely assistance.”

911 dispatchers serve as the very first of first responders, assisting Virginians during crucial moments before police, fire, or EMS arrives at the scene. Under current state law, dispatchers are excluded from receiving these benefits.

Cherry added, “During my first campaign for the House of Delegates, I promised area dispatchers that I would champion their cause. I will continue introducing this bill until such time as our 911 dispatchers receive these benefits.”

In 2022, Cherry was named “Freshman Legislator of the Year” by the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters for his work in supporting local dispatchers.

The 2026 General Assembly Session will convene on Wednesday, January 14th.
